Establishing Buffalograss

Buffalograss establishes best on well-drained, non-sandy sites with plenty of sunlight and a slightly neutral soil pH. Start by preparing a firm, clean seedbed—either through light tillage or aggressive mowing—and apply a starter fertilizer if needed. Seed should be planted 0.25–0.5 inches deep with good soil contact, then lightly packed to ensure proper germination. The best planting window is spring to early summer when soil temperatures reach at least 50°F.

Consistent but light watering is crucial during establishment. It is important to keep the top layer moist without causing runoff. Mowing frequently at a lower setting encourages lateral spread. This practice also helps suppress weeds. Once established, Buffalograss requires minimal water (about 1 inch per month) and modest fertilization. Proper mowing, careful watering, and selective herbicide (Mesotrione, Quinclorac at planting) help control weeds and promote a dense, healthy turf.
